The XJTLU PhD Programme Entry Requirement specify the levels of Academic and English required to enter individual PhD programmes.
CHINA:
The minimum entry requirement for Bachelor or Master degree holder is:
- Top 100 of 2021 Shanghai Ranking or World-class universities or First-class disciplines (MoE, People’s Republic of China): 75 percent or above (Weighted Average Mark)
- Other universities: 80 - 85 percent or above (Weighted Average Mark), depending on your undergraduate/postgraduate institution
Note: Shanghai Ranking of The Best Chinese Universities is subject to annual update at https://www.shanghairanking.cn/rankings/bcur/2022
UK:
- UK first or 2:1 class Bachelor degree with Honours
- Or UK Pass with Merit Master degree
NORTH AMERICA:
- 3.0 Cumulative GPA (out of 4) for Bachelor or Master degree holder.
OTHER REGIONS:
- Equivalent to the above UK first or 2:1 class Bachelor degree or Pass with Merit Master degree.
English Language requirement:
All students applying to PhD programme must demonstrate that they are competent in the use of the English language and satisfy the University’s requirements. You should normally possess an appropriate IELTS, or equivalent score as listed on University of Liverpool webpage. Please contact the Admissions Team at doctoralstudies@xjtlu.edu.cn to clarify what this is if you are unsure.
You will qualify for an exemption from the English language requirement if one of the following applies to you:
- You are a national of a majority English-speaking country:
- Antigua and Barbuda; Australia; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Canada; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Jamaica; New Zealand; St Kitts and Nevis; St Lucia; St Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; USA; UK.
- You have completed/are completing a degree in a majority English-speaking country (Chinese joint venture programmes are not included). Please note this only valid for two years from the date awarded the degree to the start date of the PhD programme.

Program Description
OVERVIEW
The Department of Architecture welcomes proposals for its research-based PhD programme. Potential candidates are invited to position their PhD research proposals on one or more of the Department’s areas of strength, which include:
- Architectural design and architectural studio education
- Architectural, environmental or construction technology
- Computer-aided architectural design
- Architectural history and built heritage studies
- Social and cultural study of the built environment.
Our PhD programme is a strategic research collaboration between XJTLU and the University of Liverpool, based at XJTLU. Upon successful completion of your programme you will receive a degree from the University of Liverpool, which is recognised by the UK’s Department of Education as well as China’s Ministry of Education.
The normal length of full-time PhD programme is three years. At the end of three years’ full-time study, you can apply for an extension of one year to complete the writing of your dissertation. Part-time PhD degrees usually take four to seven years.
As a registered full-time PhD student, you have the opportunity to apply for a research visit to the University of Liverpool for up to three months. Your accommodation and travel fees will be covered by XJTLU and the University of Liverpool.
Full-time PhD students are funded to attend local and international conferences during their studies, with a budget of up to RMB 16,500.

Your application must be supported by at least one academic reference from someone who has taught you at highest degree level, and must bear the official letterhead of your referee's workplace and his/her handwritten signature. If you are a graduate, you may provide one employer reference in place of an academic reference.

10. A copy of Master dissertation (or an equivalent writing sample) and examiners reports available
