OVERVIEW
Do you want to gain insight into the world’s largest consumer market and second largest economy? The Doing Business in a Changing China Summer School will give you firsthand business experience in China, delivered by the country’s largest Sino-foreign university.
In just two weeks (29 June - 10 July 2021), this new programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge to navigate China’s complex business environment, giving you a competitive edge in international business.
China is rich in history, culture and tradition. At the same time, it has experienced unprecedented economic growth over the past few decades. As China cements its position as a global player, there is a growing demand for business professionals capable of operating in this important international market.
From the impact of the trade war to socialism and capitalism in the Chinese context, the programme will provide an overview of the many factors influencing China’s business environment. You will not only learn about China’s economy but you will gain an understanding of the role history, culture and tradition play in the country’s continuing development.The summer school has the following themes-
Trading China Since China was accepted as member of the WTO in 2001, the epicenter of world trade shifted towards the Pacific Region. After years of being the world's exporting powerhouse, China launched the One Belt One Road initiative as a transcontinental strategy to boost world trade and increase international cooperation.
Changing China The scope of the socioeconomic change of China is unprecedented in world history. China now is synonym of world class infrastructure, protagonism in international organizations and leading enterprises. Considering the historical foundation of this process is fundamental to understanding China's economic success.
Consuming China As the largest market in the world, China offers numerous opportunities for foreign entrepreneurs. The complexity of emerging markets in China is both a challenge and opportunity to achieve successful business options in the future.
Innovative China The Chinese economy has evolved beyond manufacturing?e towards cutting-edge high-end production, through cycles of innovation and increasing entrepreneurial spirit. What is the policy ‘Made in China’ 2025 and how does this impact the world as we know it?
Urban China Cities and urban societies are the center of value creation and consumption in any economy. The urban transformation of China has created the largest and most vibrant urban markets in the world.
Business culture in China Culture and social values are decisive variables in international business and negotiations. Understanding the context of everyday life in China brings more chances to discover business opportunities
Based in Suzhou, a 25-minute train ride from Shanghai, you will study in a city home to nearly 100 Fortune 500 companies. Suzhou’s proximity to these multinationals means you will have the chance to participate in formal onsite visits at world-leading companies.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The Doing Business in a Changing China Summer School will provide you with some key insights on China and its business environment. These are some of the activities that you will undertake during the summer school:
- Lectures on Chinese economy such as “Made in China 2025 - Understanding China’s Economic Ambitions” or “Trade Wars and Tariffs – China and the World”
- Industry visits to Fortune 500 companies
- Guided field trips to Yiwu- the worlds centre of small commodity trade; Shanghai Free trade zone and the tech centre of Hangzhou.
- Lectures on Chinese society such as “China in Transition – The Path to Now” or “China's Urban Revolution”
- Expert guided Shanghai and Suzhou city tours and social mixers and weekend leisure activities.
TEACHING STAFF
Members of the International Business School Suzhou, the Department of International Relations and the Department of China Studies teaching on the Doing Business in a Changing China Summer School include:
- Professor David Goodman- (Professor of Chinese Politcs)
- Adam Cross (Professor of International Business and Head of Department of International Relations)
- Roberto Donà (Professor of Practice in Management)
- Beibei Tang (Senior Associate Professor and Head of Department of China Studies).
Professor Adam Cross is a leading scholar in the field of the internationalization of Chinese businesses. He has co-edited four books, and has contributed to more than fifty book chapters and articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, International Business Review, and Management International Review.
Professor David SG Goodman is one of the world’s foremost authorities on social and political change in China. One of the most published scholars in the field, Professor Goodman’s research spans social change and regional development, as well as the history of the Chinese Communist Party. He is Professor Emeritus at both the University of Sydney and the University of Technology Sydney, and is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences.
FEES
RMB 8,000 (excluding travel to and from China). Fee covers short distance travel within China, cultural activities, company visits and tuition.
Expected living expenses for 2 weeks will be around RMB 4,200 to cover your accommodation and meal expenses.

- If you are a student from a partner university, you will automatically receive a discount of 20 percent of the tuition fee.
